Early August. The Mayor of Famagusta, Simos Ioannou, in his statements to the Media, announces that at this year's anti-occupation event of the Municipality of Famagusta, for the first time, the pseudo-mayor of Famagusta, Suleiman Olutsai, has been invited and will attend.

The invitation triggers reactions both within the Municipal Council and the political parties.

The Mayor of Famagusta defends the invitation and states that President Christodoulidis was also aware of its mission. However, the pseudo-mayor of Famagusta backs down, and on August 4 he informs the Municipality of Famagusta that he does not wish to attend the event after the reactions.

The following day, August 5, 2023, from the stage of the anti-occupation event, the Mayor of Famagusta, Simos Ioannou, expressed his respect to his friend - as he said - Suleiman, and answered his critics. "My mother Mesaritissa nursed me with a milk that had neither bile, nor oxen, nor poison in it. It was completely clear, it was not illegitimate, to have hatred, tar, revenge and betrayal in it."

15th of August. The Turks are celebrating with two ceremonies in Famagusta for the 49th anniversary of the "liberation" of the city. In the afternoon ceremony where a military parade was held, the speaker besides the occupying leader Ersin Tatar, was also the pseudo-mayor of Famagusta. The otherwise almost honorary anti-occupation event of the Municipality of Famagusta against Turkey, in full coordination with Ersin Tatar and the narrative of two peoples and sovereign equality, states: "The Turkish Cypriot "people" will never give up their freedom and sovereignty ».

Sigma contacted the Mayor of Famagusta, Simos Ioannou, about his comment, who stated that "we are trying to get in touch with him to see if his statements have indeed been correctly attributed to the Turkish Cypriot press. If it is true, we do not accept his claim of sovereignty. There's no point in mincing my words."

According to Mr. Ioannou, the Municipal Council of Famagusta will be immediately informed about the issue.
