AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou is touring the province of Famagusta today. In the morning he met at the City Hall of Paralimni with mayors and community leaders, followed by meetings with shopkeepers and businessmen.

Regarding his tour in the free province of Famagusta, Mr. Kyprianou said that meetings will be held with representatives of local authorities "to see how much the promises made by the government and personally by the President of the Republic in recent years have been fulfilled." .

Their finding is, he added, that while two large meetings have taken place and many promises have been made, in practice what the government has promised has not been fulfilled and he noted that these will be recorded and "we will seek in consultation with the relevant Ministries and the President of the Republic to contribute to their promotion and implementation ".

He noted that the AKEL delegation will also meet with POVEK and the shopkeepers, since as he explained "the area is predominantly tourist, it has received huge consequences" but "the support they have received so far from the government is limited. "They are still facing huge problems with rents, they will face huge difficulties when the suspension of installments for loans is terminated, while they will also face huge difficulties until the tourist year of 2021 starts again".

As Mr. Kyprianou stated, all these problems will be discussed "and we will see how we can help more in solving them, despite the fact that we have done a lot of actions so far, without having the appropriate response from the government".

The AKEL delegation will also meet with the Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EVEA) "to discuss issues concerning Famagusta, the Cyprus issue and issues related to the reform of Local Government".

"Disappointing results of the EU Foreign Ministers' Meeting"

The results of the EU Foreign Ministers' Meeting are disappointing, said AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou, adding that "unfortunately we are isolated".

In statements during his tour in the free province of Famagusta, Mr. Kyprianou stated that the Foreign Ministers' Meeting "unfortunately proves once again that the European Union is placed at the base of two meters and stations, something" which, as he explained, "bothers us" He added that "the government should know this because it has eight years of experience".

Mr. Kyprianou also expressed his great concern, since, as he said, “all this time lately, that is, since last August, when the discussion on the issue of sanctions against Turkey began, the government has been promising a lot. "Especially lately, he has said that sanctions will be imposed, which will reduce Turkish intransigence and will force Turkey to cooperate in the effort to resume substantive negotiations on the Cyprus issue."

We are sorry, he continued, “to say that yesterday's results are disappointing and in the sense that, unfortunately, we are isolated. We have not seen our European partners support us in the position we have expressed and for which we have been expressing absolute certainty lately that we would have the full support of the European Union. "

He added that "we are also concerned about the fact that, unfortunately, now everything that is discussed regarding Cyprus has to do exclusively with sanctions. We consider that the important issue and the priority for Cyprus is the solution of the Cyprus problem ".

According to the AKEL Secretary General, "the goal should be the resumption of substantive negotiations in an effort to reach an agreement on the agreed basis, ie on the basis of European and International Law, High Level Agreements and the relevant UN Resolutions. "Instead, we find that the whole effort is focused solely on sanctions."

Mr. Kyprianou also expressed great concern "about what will happen at the EU Summit and about the fact that we are once again isolated and at a dead end." The moments are critical, he said but did not want to expand on AKEL's assessment of the government's handling and said that "we will wait to see what will happen at the Summit and will take a position accordingly."

Asked to mention whether Cyprus "has run out of allies", the General Secretary of AKEL expressed the assessment that it is confirmed that the tactics we followed have not worked, at least so far. "We will wait until Thursday, it is a very critical moment and we will see how things develop," he said, adding that he reserves the right to state his party's views after the European Union summit.

Asked whether he was satisfied with the statements of the President of the Hellenic Republic, regarding the support and cooperation that exists with Greece, Mr. Kyprianou answered that with Mrs. Sakellaropoulou had "a private meeting, all the political leaders together. I want to express our full satisfaction for what we have heard from the President of the Hellenic Republic ".

However, the General Secretary of AKEL did not hide his concern "about the fact that Greece did not support us in the positions that we expressed in the Meeting of Foreign Ministers and this should ring a bell in the government for the manipulations they are carrying out. However, "due to the criticality of the situation", Mr. Kyprianou did not want to mention anything else at the moment.
