Ayia Napa: It caused death and for 7 years no warrant was issued

a 1 exclusive, Court, Nea Famagusta, Trochaio

The Famagusta District Court, which is meeting in Paralimni for a fatal accident, issued a catapult decision for the Authorities.

The fatality took place in 2009 in Ayia Napa where a driver dragged a woman who exhaled on her injuries a few days later. The driver, who was under the influence of alcohol during the collision, was in England and was continuing his normal life as no arrest warrant was issued against him.

A European warrant was finally issued in December 2016. Between November 2010, he appeared voluntarily at the Traffic Police and was charged in writing until the day the warrant was issued.

According to the decision, an arrest warrant has never been issued against him and while the Police knew from information provided by members of the Accused's family that he was in England, they still expected (the authorities) to locate him in Cyprus in order to indict.

The Court also notes that no explanation was given as to why no arrest warrant was issued against him on the same day he was charged with the offenses in writing, ie when he appeared voluntarily on 1.11.2010 or why a criminal case was not filed against him immediately, except he was expected to return to Cyprus or why the European Arrest Warrant was not issued earlier, if the Attorney General deemed such a step necessary.

In the end, he was fined 4000 euros as well as deprived of his license.
