The mayor Andreas Karagiannis gave his own answer to the harsh criticism he receives from DIKO and Konstantinos Petridis, on the occasion of the letter he sent to Elizabeth Spehar, in order for the Municipality of Deryneia to remain autonomous.

Speaking on the REPORTER website, Mr. Karagiannis stated that "no one will forbid me to send letters. The letter focuses on the bi-communal work produced by the municipality of Deryneia and is described in the latest report by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

As Mr. Karagiannis noted, "no one will disorient us from the return of the occupied city of Famagusta and we will fight for it."

Mr. Karagiannis' letter was sent to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations last September.

Karagiannis is at the top of Petridis
Mr. Karagiannis' move did not go unnoticed by former Interior Minister and current Finance Minister Konstantinos Petridis.

In a post on Twitter, Mr. Petridis wrote that he is an oxymoron (Cypriot) that the Mayor of Deryneia is fighting for the reunification of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots (and he is doing very well) but demands local "autonomy" in the provision of services, denying the union with adjacent residential areas with which it is already united on the ground ".

Attack by DIKO
DIKO, for its part, in a statement issued, had opened fire on the mayor, describing the move as unthinkable, unacceptable and hostile to the coordinated institutions of the Republic of Cyprus.

In the announcement, the party claims that "the mayor of Deryneia wants to remain undisturbed, in order to supposedly play a role in the contact between the two communities. It can do this through other agencies and not through the Local Government, which is nobody's business. "

In detail, the announcement:
Unimaginable, unacceptable and hostile to the co-ordinated institutions of the Republic of Cyprus, the letter from the Mayor of Deryneia to the head of UNFICYP, Elizabeth Spehar, by which, in essence, calls on the United States to intervene in the sovereign right. , in accordance with the Constitution, the laws and legal procedures of the Cypriot state.
It is the right of the Mayor to disagree with the proposal for the reform of the Local Government concerning Deryneia, but the Mayor or anyone else has no right to call on third parties to intervene so that his municipality is not affected.

The reform of the Local Government is a matter for the government, the Parliament and the others involved, such as the Union of Municipalities and no one else.

We understand, the announcement continues, that the Mayor of Deryneia wants to remain undisturbed, in order to supposedly play a role in the contact of the two communities. It can do this through other agencies and not through the Local Government, which is nobody's business.

Regardless of his position on the government's proposal for a reform of the Local Government, which will be submitted during the debate in Parliament, the Democratic Party considers the letter of the Mayor of Deryneia unacceptable.
