The Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, sent a letter to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, in which he requests detailed information on the plans for the projects, which the President announced at the provincial assembly for the development of the free province of Famagusta, organized by EBEA on Wednesday, October 19 in Ayia Napa marina.
Specifically, Mr. Karagiannis refers to the creation of a Culture Hall/Conference Center and notes that in a meeting with the Minister of the Interior in the middle of the month, it was announced that "the execution of the project will proceed with a special sponsorship from the Ministry, which will cover part of the contribution of the project, the budget of which amounts to 3,9 million euros. The approval of the application for securing a Loan from the European Investment Bank is also pending".
Regarding the reconstruction of the People's Market of the Municipality of Deryneia, the Mayor states that "the project is expected to cost around 1,4 million euros and will be implemented through the Rural Development Program 2014-2020, Measure 7 "Basic services and village reconstruction in rural areas and is under the European Funds Unit (MET)'. The project is mature and an answer is awaited from the Minister of the Interior on the issue of reducing the contribution of the unaccredited Municipality of Deryneia".
In the letter to President Christodoulidis, Mr. Karagiannis also states that he expects "a response from the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and the Department of Antiquities to cover the cost of cleaning and highlighting the Medieval Pit of Agios Konstantinos / Underground Aqueduct. The cost of maintenance amounts to approximately 500 thousand euros".
Regarding the creation of a Regional Olympic Swimming Pool in the Municipality of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis notes that "the project will meet the needs of the entire Famagusta district, promote healthy employment, medical and sports tourism and upgrade the hinterland". The cost of the project amounts to approximately 10 million euros and it is awaiting the allocation of the amount to cover the cost of carrying out a sustainability study of the project.
For the Deryneia - Frenarous road, the Mayor notes with particular satisfaction the announcement by the President of the Republic that the project is going to be carried out, however awaiting further explanations.
Regarding the Local Plan of Paralimni - Deryneia - Agia Napa, the Mayor calls on President Christodoulidis to give instructions "to speed up the publication of the Local Plan in early 2024, since the entire delay is immobilizing the three local authorities residentially and commercially".
In his letter, Mr. Karagiannis also refers to the Housing Plan for the Revitalization of Mountainous, Critical and Disadvantaged Areas, expressing particular satisfaction for the fact that both the PtD and the Minister of the Interior stated that the specific Plan will be expanded, renewed and upgraded. "Our own recommendations to the Minister of the Interior have been taken seriously" he notes and expresses the hope that "they will be included in the new, renewed Plan", which in fact recommends that President Christodoulidis announce it "on time for better preparation, both of the interested buyers as well as land development entrepreneurs".
The upgrade of the Water Reservoirs / Pipelines in Kokkinokremmos is another issue mentioned in the Mayor's letter to President Christodoulidis, noting that "the supply of drinking water from the water reservoirs of Kokkinokremmos concerns the entire province of Famagusta, tourist, rural and semi-urban areas. For this reason, the upgrade of the Water Supply Unit is required to supply drinking water all the time without further cuts and restrictive measures".
Also, Andros Karagiannis in his letter expects from the PtD the announcement of a special Upgrading and Improvement Plan for the existing houses in the Strovilion area. "The few houses of the residents of Strovilia that were built 50-60 years ago need immediate renovation, so that they can house the children and grandchildren of the elderly residents of the area in the future," he says, adding that "exceptionally, an a special amount for maintenance and renovation of existing houses, which will range between 50-150 thousand euros per house".
The Mayor of Deryneia finally expresses the hope that "at the next meeting set for next March, the announcements of the President of the Republic will be launched for the common interest of civil society, local authorities and our province in general".
