Deryneia roadblock in the final straight (VIDEO)

The opening of the Deryneia roadblock enters the final stretch, a fortnight after the informal Anastasiadis-Akkintzi dinner.

This week, work is expected to begin at an intensive pace for the 150 meters inside the dead zone.

The Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, stated that the decision to open the roadblocks is a purely political decision and that it was taken three years ago by the two leaders. Apparently, according to the Mayor of Deryneia, this decision will be implemented by July 1.

Already, the United Nations Development Program has awarded a tender to a consortium of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for asphalt paving projects within the Dead Zone. As for the roadblock that will connect Lefka with Apliki, it is scheduled to be delivered around the middle of September.

At the same time, the Mayor of Deryneia stated that the roadblocks as confidence building measures improve the daily life of the citizens and improve the contact and communication between the two communities.

Last Friday, the works at the Deryneia roadblock were inspected on the spot by the negotiator Andreas Mavrogiannis, the head of the Greek Cypriot side in the technical committee for the opening of the roadblocks, Soto Zakhaios, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
