Amalia Hatzigianni, Scientific Director of Larnaca-Famagusta General Hospitals, told KYPE that the occupancy rate of the Referral Hospital for patients with coronavirus decreased to 18,6%, adding that the average age of patients treated also fell to 59.

He added that "today at the General Hospital of Famagusta are treated 14 patients with coronavirus, one of whom is in the Intensive Care Unit as it needs closer monitoring. The fullness of the Hospital decreased to 18,6%, the average age of the patients is 59 years, with the youngest person being 33 years old and the oldest 79 years old ".

He also stated that "yesterday Monday there were 2 admissions of patients with coronavirus and 4 discharges were given to people whose re-examinations were negative in Covid-19. At the Eden Resort Rehabilitation Center in Tersefanou there are 53 people, who will remain until their complete negativity ".

Answering a relevant question, Ms. Hatzigianni said that "out of the 14 patients with coronavirus, only one had been vaccinated, but without being given the necessary time to acquire complete immunity before becoming ill, with his state of health being good. He also noted that "in 2020 and until Sunday, May 23, 1525 patients with coronavirus were hospitalized, with most of them winning the battle. At the same time the staff of the Hospital, doctors, nurses, medical and paramedical staff, was from the first moment in the fight against the pandemic gaining worthy, love, trust and respect of society, not only in the free area of ​​Famagusta but in the whole of Cyprus ".

Regarding the expansion of the Famagusta General Hospital, he said that "the projects are progressing on both the second and the third floor of the Hospital, while on June 8 the first phase of the project is completed. The works of the Electromechanical Service on the two floors are expected to be completed by June 22 and by the end of the month, the two new wards will be ready to be used for the needs of the patients ".

He added that a total of two new wards with a capacity of 56 beds will operate for the needs of patients. "With the operation of the new wards, the plan will be developed that provides new medical specialties to the citizens of the free province of Famagusta, including an ophthalmologist, urologist and dermatologist", he said and noted that "for the specific specialties there is staff but there were no the appropriate infrastructure ".

According to Ms. Hatzigianni, “the third floor of the Hospital will operate as an independent Coronavirus Patient Care Unit and will be specially designed for this purpose. The floor will also operate with its own external elevator, which is now being adapted to the building, without affecting the operation of the rest of the Hospital building ".

With the operation of the now independent Coronavirus Patient Care Unit, he said "all the other areas of the Hospital will be vacated so that all other specialties can operate smoothly".

Amalia Hatzigianni expressed "the complete satisfaction" of both herself and the rest of the staff of the General Hospital of Famagusta for the completion of the two floors, something that as she explained for her was a dream come true. "What we wanted was to see the Famagusta Free Province Hospital fully operational for all patients and for all specialties," he concluded.
