Paralimni High School secured a Pancyprian gold medal in the competition of the University of Nicosia "Research by 2020 students" in the category of Lyceums and Technical Schools.

The research paper is entitled "We know and protect the solitary bees of the Famagusta District".

It is noted that in addition to social bees there are also solitary bees that are less well known. As the saying goes, they live on their own and make their own nests. They are excellent pollinators and can pollinate a much larger number of plants in difficult weather conditions compared to farmed bees.

The students used the method of colored traps to collect pollinators. After receiving training from TEPAK colleague Dr. Andri Barnabas and using the stereoscope and the key, they classified the insects they collected. Through organized actions they informed the school community, but also by visiting the public markets in various communities and Municipalities informed farmers and producers about the consequences of the extinction of bees, which, as the German physicist Albert Einstein pointed out, if the we have only four years to live.

Then they suggested simple ways to protect them that can be easily applied by each of us, such as avoiding the use of pesticides (if we are not obliged to use them, use the least toxic to bees and follow their instructions exactly), spraying should be done early in the morning or late at night (we do not spray at all during the flowering period), the cultivation of beekeeping plants and the construction of a hotel for bees.

The student group consisted of students Andria Loukari, Xenio Ioannou, Vassilis Koutsoftas, Katerina Papadopoulou and Elena Pittaki. The student group was coordinated by the biologist Katerina Dimitriou-Giannaki.
