A class discussion on social issues raised awareness among students at the private school Xenion in Paralimni about the issue of hunger and how many people in the world are losing their lives every day due to lack of food and medical care.
As the students explain, every 10 seconds a child dies of starvation. With one euro a day we can save this child for one day. With 30 euros we save a child for a month. With 400 euros a child stays alive for another month.
30 students of the 3rd grade of Xenion High School participated on Friday and Saturday in the campaign "30 hours of eating", in a worldwide effort to raise money to fight hunger. Participants experienced what a child lives without food for 30 hours.
The students did not eat at all for 30 hours and could only drink water. They built their own shelters and spent the night at school. On Friday afternoon, they offered volunteer work to charities and animal welfare institutions in the province of Famagusta.
As the teacher, Sofia Tsantila, explained, all the children of the school have collected money inside the school to contribute money for this purpose. One class has given the money they collected in their box office with the aim of visiting the amusement park together at the end of the year. They chose to be deprived of this joy because the joy they feel offering to their fellow man is greater and more substantial.
