Complaints on Griva Digeni Avenue in Nicosia have been reduced by a third after the speed limit was changed to about 2.000 a month.

Only 8 thousand out-of-court settlements have been served, although since June 2, when the cameras came into force, 46 thousand driver complaints have been made, while 24-25 thousand out-of-court settlements have been issued in printed form.

At the same time, the photo-tagging system is expected to be installed in 2015 throughout Cyprus.

A few days ago, a meeting of the Road Safety Council was held at the Ministry of Transportation, with the participation of the Ministers of Transportation and Justice and representatives of competent bodies.

In his statements after the session, the Minister of Communications Marios Dimitriadis said that the Ministry has proceeded with the offers for the photo-marking system throughout Cyprus.

He added that thoughts are being made at the same time to reconsider the speed limit, although, as he said, international road safety rules should be observed. He mentioned as an example the reduction to 1/3 of the complaints in Griva Digeni, after the increase of the limit to 65 km / h.

At the same time, the Minister of Communications appealed to the Parliament to proceed immediately with the enactment of laws that have been pending for years, such as the reduction of the level of alcohol for young drivers and the drug test, which, as he said, will improve road safety.

The Minister of Justice, Ionas Nikolaou, stated, for his part, that the issues of computerization of out-of-court settlements should be regulated, allowing their immediate issuance, in order to proceed with the implementation of the integrated photo-labeling system throughout Cyprus.

He cited as an example the extrajudicial for violations in Griva Digeni, where, as he said, only 8 thousand have been served.

He added that the bidding process will be followed for the installation of the system, while at the moment the issue is in the consultation stage.

He added that "within 2015, the photo-tagging system should be installed throughout Cyprus", while until then "we should be ready" for the extrajudicial extradition to be issued immediately.

Mr. Nikolaou referred to both issues that occupied the Road Safety Council, to reduce the age of obtaining a student license to 17 and examination of drivers over 70 years.

According to the Minister of Justice, the competent services have been asked to prepare a comprehensive program, in order to properly utilize the period from 17,5 years - which is currently the limit - to 17, by implementing theoretical training programs, or even programs simulation. On this issue, the Minister of Communications added that there will be a specific proposal to the next Road Safety Council, which will be held in late February.

Regarding the examination of drivers over 70 years old, Mr. Nikolaou said that there is no intention to deprive these people of the opportunity to drive. We are interested in their safety and in general, he said, adding that the orientation is to have a medical examination that will confirm their ability to drive safely. "It is not our intention and our goal to hurt them," he said.

Finally, regarding the Strategic Road Safety Plan, he said that the involved services were asked to prepare a preliminary study with specific actions, in order to plan for the implementation of the Plan.
