Speaking at the opening ceremony of the march in Deryneia, the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Nikos Kougialis stated that if the forces State, scientific community, civil society join together, cancer can be prevented, diagnosed and defeated .
The procession started at 11:00 in the morning from the City Hall of Deryneia and ended at the Monument of Christodoulas in Sotira, where Mayor Sotiras welcomed the volunteer hikers. The first march took place in 1976 and has been held every April since. The purpose of the Christodoula course is to raise public awareness on cancer issues and to provide the necessary financial resources for the operation of multiple programs and services, which are offered free of charge to cancer patients.
The course has been established by the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Association as an annual event of social solidarity and moral support to cancer patients and their families and is the main source of income of the Association.
The institution of the march gives every year, the required respect, interest and love to all those suffering from cancer and in the face of Christodoula, sees the symbol of the struggle for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
The income from the course each year ranges in the amount of 450.000 - 550.000 euros and this helps significantly, so that the Cyprus Cancer Association, continues to offer free specialized and upgraded services to cancer patients.
Last year, the net contributions from the course of Christodoulas and the Cypriot fundraiser amounted to approximately € 472,730 and in total, together with the other contributions and the government sponsorship, reached the amount of 2,5 million.
