A few words about the Kolokassi Festival:
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the first Kolokassi Festival, which was organized for the first time by the Onisilos Sotiras Association in 1973. The Kolokassi Festival seeks to promote the Kolokassi as the local product of the Savior, but also the transmission and dissemination of love. for this unique dish. This year, through the cooperation of the colossus producers with the Municipality of Sotiras, the long-standing efforts to submit the file of the colocasia to the European Union as a Product with a Designation of Origin came to fruition. At the same time, the inclusion of the colocasia in the menus of all restaurants is sought, first in Sotiras and then throughout Cyprus.

Meet the pumpkin:
The oldest reference to Kolokasi in Cyprus dates back to 1191 AD. according to which it was served at a dinner to celebrate the wedding of Richard the Lionheart to Berengaria at Limassol Castle (Jeffery, 1926). According to Sakellario (1890), the best Kolokasias of Cyprus were produced in Lapithos and Paphos. Prior to the Turkish invasion of 1974, significant areas were cultivated in Agios Andronikos Karpasias, in Syrianochori, and to a lesser extent in the province of Paphos. Today, Kolokasi is cultivated mainly in the province of Famagusta, and especially in Sotira.

The planting of Kolokassi begins at the end of February (early planting) and continues until May (late planting) in fields with red soil, which has been preceded by cultivation with rich fertilization. It produces a large central rhizome (mappa), many lateral rhizomes (pulles) and non-edible leaves.

Its production is mainly available in the local market, while some quantities are exported to Great Britain for the Cypriot community.
