The UN does not rule out a deadlock in the Cyprus issue

Christofias-Eroglou meet today.

He no longer rules out United Nations Organization to face the possibility of even declaring a deadlock in the negotiations on the Cyprus issue, at the new meeting of the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with the Cypriot president Dimitris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou, in January in New York…

Analyzing, in an exclusive interview with RIK, the options before the international organization, the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General, Alexander Downer, reiterated the position that the talks could not continue indefinitely.

Asked whether a break in the talks is possible, in view of the Cypriot presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2012, Mr. Downer expressed the view that this will never happen.

The Cypriots, he added, will either reach an agreement or not. He also expressed the assessment that "in case of a complete impasse, it is very likely that the end of the efforts for a solution on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation will occur".

If some, said Alexander Downer, believe that Cyprus can be reunited without this model, they must have enough optimism, which - he added - is not shared by the United Nations.

He also said that a lot has been agreed in the last three years and the structure of a federal Cyprus is being gradually created, adding that it would be a great pity if the effort fails and everything is abandoned.

As for gas, the UN official said it could benefit the negotiation process and become, as he put it, the "dowry" of the settlement agreement.
