A wave of dust, in addition to normal values, is affecting Cyprus today, Thursday, March 2.

An announcement from the Labor Inspection Department of the Ministry of Labor, Welfare and Social Security states that “at 8:00 am, the average hourly concentration of inhalable particulate matter less than 10 μm in diameter (PM10) in the atmosphere was ranged between 78 μg / m3 and 145 μg / m3 (micrograms per cubic meter) ”.

He adds that "therefore it is expected that the average 24-hour value will exceed the corresponding limit value of 50 μg / m3 set in the relevant legislation, while the last 24-hour average value for yesterday, Wednesday, March 1, ranged between 55 and 95 μg / m3 depending on the region ”.

Due to the small size of the inhalable suspended particles and their potential negative impact on human health, it is recommended to the public and especially to vulnerable groups (children, the elderly and the sick) to avoid moving in the open until the phenomenon is over.

According to the announcement, it is required that employers take appropriate measures (organizational or technical), after assessing the risks to employees in the open and in addition, it is recommended that employees in the open to use appropriate means of personal protection ”.

More information and online information on the results of the measurements can be found on the specialized website www.airquality.gov.cy and in the application "Air Quality Cyprus", which citizens can install for free on their mobile phone from Google Play.
