The British magazine Economist ranks Cyprus among the high risk group for outbreaks of demonstrations or unrest in 2014 due to the economic crisis and the weakening of confidence in the political system.

Portugal, Spain, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Ethiopia and Ukraine are in the same group.

The Economist puts Greece at "very high risk" for unrest, along with countries such as Argentina, Egypt, Venezuela, Syria, Bangladesh and Lebanon.

Ireland and Italy are in the "intermediate risk" countries.

The ranking was compiled by the Economist EMU "team" of analysts and, as Laza Kekic explains, the difficult financial situation is considered necessary but not always a sufficient condition for the outbreak of unrest.

"Declining incomes and high unemployment are not always followed by riots. "Only when economic hardship is accompanied by other elements of weakness is there a risk of instability," he said, citing "major economic inequalities, poor governance, low levels of welfare state, ethnic tensions and a history of unrest."

"Of particular importance to the outbreak of unrest in recent years seems to have been the erosion of trust in governments and institutions, the crisis of democracy," Kekic said.
