Municipalities and communities owe millions of euros to Water Supply. The debts to the Department of Water Development are highlighted in its annual report for 2012 by the Auditor General of the Republic.

Drowned in debt to the Department of Water Development are the authorities of Local Government. According to the findings of the audit service for 2012, Municipalities and Communities have outstanding water bills amounting to 44 million seven hundred thousand euros and now nine million 300 thousand euros interest.

According to the report submitted on December 13 by Auditor General Chrystalla Giorkatzi to the President of the Republic, Local Authorities continue to invoice and collect the water bill from their consumers, without paying the purchase value to the Development Department. Water.

The example of the Municipality of Limassol is typically mentioned, whose debts to the Department, amounting to 56 million seven hundred thousand euros, were written off based on a relevant agreement signed and after approval by the Council of Ministers in 2009. However, the re-accumulation of amounts due to Section, which on 31.12.2012 amounted to fourteen and a half million euros, not including interest.

Regarding the Water Supply Councils of Nicosia and Larnaca, at a meeting of the competent Ministerial Committee, in 2008, it was decided to submit a proposal to the Council of Ministers to write off the overdue debts by 31.12.2008. In the case of Nicosia, they amount to 21 million euros and Larnaca to 15 million. The issue is still pending.

Significant debts also concern the Municipalities of Germasogeia with 16 million seven hundred thousand euros, Ayia Napa with 11 million six hundred thousand euros and Aradippou with 6 million eight hundred thousand euros.

According to what is recorded in the report, significant amounts are also owed by Community Councils, the size of which does not justify the amount of their debt. The report notes that some Local Authorities have been sentenced in relation to their debts, with which they still do not comply.

Some Town Halls and Community Councils have signed arrangements with the Water Department, for the gradual payment of water bills.

Another interesting point in the Auditor General's report concerns the security of the Supreme Court. As mentioned, the installation of a closed circuit, which will cover the entire area of ​​the Nicosia Courts and the Supreme Court, has been pending since 2007. in the new building of the Supreme Court.
