Cypriots want Cyprus Airways

Cyprus Airways should not be closed but privatized with the right investor, Cyprus needs a National Carrier and it is an airline that enjoys confidence in the security levels it offers. This is, in short, the view of the overwhelming majority of Cypriots (at 85% -87%) for Cyprus Airways, as recorded through a survey of the image and attitude of citizens in relation to the Cyprus Airways conducted by CYMAR MARKET RESEARCH.

The purpose of the research was to clarify the perception that exists in Cyprus, in relation to key issues concerning the state air carrier, such as the safety of the CA, the need for a national air carrier, the views on the future of the CA. The research also examines the position of public opinion in relation to the expected effects on air ticket prices in the event of the closure of Cyprus Airways, who the citizens consider to be to blame for the situation in the state-owned airline, as well as the crucial issue. and topicality - the evaluation of Government moves to find an investor.

The research was assigned to CYMAR Market Research by the Pancyprian Pilots Guild (PASYPI). It was done with the methodology of quantitative research with telephone interviews and the use of a structured questionnaire. The 1.000 interviews, on which the results were based, were conducted between 24/11/2014 and 26/11/2014 using the CATI (computer assisted telephone interviewing) method.

Sample selection was done with randomly formed telephone numbers. Setting quotas per residential area so that the geographical distribution of the sample is proportional to the distribution of the actual population. Men and women aged 18 and over.

In summary, the survey results show that nine out of ten Cypriots believe that Cyprus Airways is a safe airline (87%) and that Cyprus needs a national carrier (87%).

Opinions differ as to what will happen to air ticket prices in the event of the closure of CAs. 32% of respondents estimate that ticket prices will increase. 31% believe that they will remain the same and 22% that they will decrease. 16% have not expressed an opinion.

The respondents who were asked to choose what they prefer, between the closure of Cyprus Airways and their complete privatization by finding the right investor, most Cypriots choose to stay open and find the right investor to take them ( 85%). At the same time, the majority believe that the Government is not making the right moves to find an investor for the state-owned company (53%). Only 28% believe that the Government is taking the right steps to find an investor.

KA is a safe airline

87% of Cypriots estimate that Cyprus Airways is a safe airline, while this picture concerns all demographic groups. Only 7% of Cypriots believe that KA is not a safe airline. At the same very high percentages (87%) is maintained the opinion that Cyprus needs to have its own national carrier. However, here the quotas differ with citizens between the ages of 25 and 44 believing that a national carrier is needed at a rate of 81% -83%, while those aged 18-24 and over 45 believe at a rate of 90% and above that the national carrier.

Still similar is the strong belief of the Cypriots that Cyprus Airways should not close -85% - and only 9% believe that the company should close. About 85% are in favor of the position that the right solution is for Cyprus Airways to be privatized with the right investor.

Also, mainly the Cypriots believe that the situation at Cyprus Airways is largely responsible for the respective governments (42%), the respective Cypriot Airlines Boards (37%), the senior management of the Airlines (34%) and political parties (27%). The percentage that considers the guilds of employees (11%) and the junior staff of the company (5%) as the main culprits of the situation is much more limited.
