The inauguration of the Improvement of the Main Road of Karyon Avenue in the community of Avgoros took place yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Interior, Socrates Hasikos.
Karyon Avenue, with a total length of 3,7 km, is the central axis of the community and part of the connecting road Ormidia - Avgorou.
The section of the road includes two lanes, arrangements for the safe conduct of traffic, such as the installation of traffic lights at important junctions, paved sidewalks on both sides of the road, linear green lane, pedestrian crossings, bays for bus parking and bus lanes.
The first phase of the project, which was inaugurated yesterday, concerns a project with a total length of 1.2 km that started in February 2015 and was completed in July 2016 with a total construction cost of 4 million euros.
The second phase of the Project, with a total length of 300 meters, is currently under construction, with a budgeted cost of approximately € 700.000 and is expected to be completed by February 2017, while at a later stage the implementation of the final Phase of the Project will be promoted. , with a total length of 2,5 km, with an estimated cost of 3 million euros ".
Finally, it should be mentioned that the financing of the Project is covered by the State and the Community Council of Avgoros, with a ratio of 4/5 to 1/5 respectively, while the part of the Project with a total cost of € 405.000, which concerns the construction of the sewage system was co-financed by the European Regional Cohesion Fund, for the programming period 2007-2013, under the Sewerage Project of the Kokkinochoria Complex, which is implemented by the Department of Water Development of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment ”.

In his speech, the Mayor of Avgorou, Mr. Panagiotis Michailas thanked the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr. Nikos Kougialis for the support they provided to Avgorou for the implementation of the project. As Mr. Michaelas mentioned, this is a big project which has solved significant flood and traffic problems for the residents of Avgoros.
At the same time, however, he referred to the Sewerage project carried out in Avgorou, which he left behind many imperfections. As the community leader Avgorou pointed out, he has spent most of his term trying to repair the defects that have been caused.

The government spends large sums of the state budget annually on urban development projects related to the improvement / construction of public road networks and the landscaping and renovation of public open spaces, said the Minister of the Interior, Socrates Hasikos. Urban Planning and Housing and in collaboration with other government departments, formulates, revises and implements the traffic policy expressed through the Development Plans.
During his greeting, Mr. Hasikos specifically mentioned that in the State Budget for Urban Planning, were included for the years 2015 and 2016 total expenses of € 18,2m. and € 38,7m respectively.
In addition, he said that for the year 2017 the inclusion in the state budget of an amount of € 38,0 million is planned, noting that in this context is included the implementation of the Project for improvement of the Main Road in the Community of Avgoros - Karyon Avenue.

I feel special joy and honor for the invitation of the Community Council of Avgoros to perform the inauguration of the Urban Road Project of the Improvement of the Main Road of the Community, Karyon Avenue. It is now widely accepted that the proper functioning of a community presupposes, inter alia, a properly prioritized road network that can effectively and efficiently meet the transportation needs of the population in an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable way.
The Ministry of Interior, through the Department of Urban Planning and Housing and in collaboration with other Government Departments, formulates, revises and implements the Traffic Policy expressed through the Development Plans.
Assessing the Cypriot reality of the past decades and documenting the need for more, safer and friendlier road networks, as well as outdoor areas, the government annually allocates large funds from the state budget for urban development projects related to the improvement / construction of public roads and road construction. and renovation of public open spaces.
Specifically, in the State Budget for Urban Planning, were included for the years 2015 and 2016 total expenditures of € 18,2m. and € 38,7m respectively. In addition, for the year 2017 is planned the inclusion in the state budget of an amount of € 38,0m. The implementation of the Project that we are launching today is part of the above context.

The construction of Phase AD, which is being inaugurated today, with a total length of approximately 1.2 mm, began in February 2015 and was completed in July 2016. The total construction cost amounted to € 4.061.000.
Phase B1΄ of the Project, with a total length of 300 meters, is currently under construction, with a budgeted cost of approximately € 700.000 and is expected to be completed around February 2017. At a later stage, the implementation of the final Phase B2΄ will be promoted. of the Project, with a total length of 2,5 km, with a budgeted cost of € 3,0 million.
The financing of the Project is covered by the State and the Community Council of Avgoros, in a ratio of 4/5 to 1/5, respectively.

It is a high standard infrastructure project, which combines the comfortable and safe traffic of cyclists and pedestrians and contributes to improving the quality of life.
