The hundreds of dead fish that have erupted on the surface of the Achna dam, one of the most important wetlands in the province of Famagusta, have caused an alginate impression and sadness in recent days.

According to farmers and locals, the phenomenon was most likely caused by the very low water temperatures due to the recent frosts, combined with the fact that the level of the dam was low, because the Water Department did not release quantities of water from the Kourri dam.

Commenting on the issue, DISY Famagusta MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, pointed out that if the latter has really happened, then the Water Department is responsible and responsible for the ecological damage caused to the Achna dam.

He also added that he will submit a question to the Parliament today, Monday, asking the Water Department to officially express its positions on the causes of death of the fish in the dam and especially if their death was caused due to the low water level that did not protect the fish from cold of the last days. It is noted that the Achna dam is the only one in Kokkinochoria and is the closest walk of many families in the area so that children can admire the fish, but also enjoy the flora and fauna of the wider area where the project is located.

A walk that is anything but enjoyable these days as the dead fish began to show signs of decay, presenting a disgusting spectacle in the water.

The Water Department should immediately take care of cleaning the fence from dead fish in which millions of flies will hatch, said MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis.

It is also worth mentioning that, despite this year's rain, the quantities of water released so far in the dam of Achna are limited, a fact that for several weeks now causes discomfort and protests of farmers and other residents of Famagusta province.
