He died at the age of 83. He was facing serious health problems recently, while being treated in a private hospital.
Who was the former King Constantine?
The former King Konstantinos was born on June 2, 1940 in the Palace of Old Psychikos. His parents were Prince Paul of Greece, brother and heir of King George II of Greece, and Princess Frederick of Greece, Hanover, Great Britain and Ireland.
He was king of Greece from 1964 to 1973, until the referendum that abolished the monarchy in the country.
With the new referendum of 1974, he definitively lost his position in Greece, as the citizens chose with a percentage of 69,2% the Royal Republic as the form of the state. Since 1967, after the failed counter-movement against the dictatorship that he organized on December 13, he lived in self-exile in Italy and the United Kingdom, while in recent years he decided to settle permanently in Greece.
The involvement in the Apostasy events
As king, he played an important role in the political events that led to the imposition of the dictatorship, with his involvement in the Apostasy events being more important, when he clashed with Prime Minister George Papandreou, resulting in the latter's resignation.
He turned against the Greek State demanding 161,1 million euros and finally after legal disputes he managed to be compensated with 13,7 million euros, which were collected by DOU Acharnon, in March 2003.
In public discourse after the abolition of the kingship he was usually referred to as ex-King Constantine or Constantine Glyxburg.
