In the presence of the Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew, the inauguration of the new Cathedral of the Salvation of the People took place on Sunday in Bucharest, which when completed will be the largest orthodox church in the world.

The construction of the temple - which is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ and the Apostle Andrew - began in 2010 and its construction cost is estimated at 110 million euros.

At the inauguration, 2.000 worshipers were inside the Holy Temple for the first time, while several thousand were watching from giant screens in the courtyard.

The church has the largest church bell in the world, which surpasses the bell of St. Peter in the cathedral of Cologne.

The Ecumenical Patriarch will officiate at the opening of the sanctuary. Bartholomew, while at the liturgy of St. Andrew, on November 30, will be officiated by Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem. In fact, the Romanian Orthodox Church has brought the holy relic of the hand of St. Andrew from Greece for the occasion.

The new cathedral in Bucharest is five to ten meters taller than the Cathedral of Jesus the Savior in Moscow, which to date - at 103 meters - was the tallest cathedral in the world.
