At least 241 people have been killed in 2021 by anti-personnel mines, improvised explosive devices, bombs and remnants of war in previously war-torn areas across Syria, a non-governmental organization said on Sunday.

That number includes 114 children and 19 women, most of whom lost their lives in the first quarter of the year, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The UK-based NGO has called on international organizations to help clear mines, bombs and other remnants of war and launch a public awareness campaign.

The state-run SANA news agency also reported several incidents in which civilians were killed by landmines, explosives and ammunition, which were said to have been placed in most cases by terrorist organizations in areas they controlled during the war.
