Fifteen former soldiers were sentenced today to life in prison for plotting to seize the headquarters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Istanbul during the 2016 coup attempt.

The court in Silivri, near Istanbul, found the accused guilty of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order by using force.

They are accused of attempting to seize the AKP headquarters on July 15, 2016, the night of the failed coup attempt, according to Anatoli.

The trials that have begun since the failed coup have reached an unprecedented scale in Turkey, and authorities have had to build new courtrooms.

More than 50.000 people have been arrested and at least 140.000 have been fired or made available in the wake of a series of clean-ups since July 15 and the declaration of a state of emergency in the country.
