Fears of an impending big bang on Bali's Mount Agung have risen and the evacuation zone around the volcano has widened. Indonesian authorities have raised the alert level to its highest level.

The island's airport was closed as a result of the fumes. Authorities say the dark smoke and ash have reached 3.400 meters above the top of the mountain, which is also emitting fire.

Officials have warned residents to stay away from currents and debris known as lahars, which have been spotted flowing from the mountain.

The National Disaster Council raised the warning to level four because of "the possibility and imminent danger of disaster."

The volcano appears to emit "continuous ash bubbles" that are occasionally accompanied by "eruptions" that were heard 12 kilometers from the top.

Authorities have extended the blockade to a radius of 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the volcano and ordered the residents to be removed.

About 25.000 people are believed to still be in temporary shelters as more than 140.000 people have fled in recent months.
