The Speaker of the Parliament, Adamos Adamou, expressed concern over the possibility of postponing the parliamentary elections. "The issue is considered over, the parliamentary elections will be held as planned and any further discussion is unnecessary," he said after the meeting of leaders or representatives of the parliamentary parties.

"I had expressed concern about the conduct of the parliamentary elections," he said, explaining that more people still needed to be vaccinated until we reached the critical percentage of 60-70% of the population.

"The answer I got from all the party leaders is that we can and so, since that is the view of the parliamentary parties, the debate stops here," he added.

Mr. Adamou also said that "the discussion took place, the answers were given and I think that with the measures taken by the executive power, the Government, the Ministry of Interior, we will be able to hold the parliamentary elections on the date set"

He finally asked "the discussion to stop here. It was a concern, it was expressed, discussed and the final decision was made, which is from all parties ".

DISY President Averof Neophytou spoke about a "non-existent issue". "If there was any issue to be discussed about the elections, it was to get them done as soon as possible, to save the world and society from this toxic climate," he said. He went on to say that "every day that remains, either with the Parliament open or the extension of the pre-election period, the more damage is done to the place"

"This is the clear position of DISY, that is why we are the party that submitted and supported proposals, even for early elections a few months ago," he noted.

Mr. Neophytou stated that there has never been any official position from any party, nor was there any official position from the Speaker of Parliament to postpone elections, but as Mr. Adamou stated, he himself had some thoughts. "The issue does not exist and cannot exist," he said.

Asked if it is disgraceful for the Parliament to say that as long as it remains open, toxicity is caused, Mr. Neophytou answered that "when you say a reality, it does not mean that you underestimate anything". "Every day that passes, the toxicity increases. All in a vote hunt. In the end, society, the economy and the stability of the country suffer. "Elections must be held, to end as soon as possible," he said.

Besides, Mr. Neophytou wondered who guarantees the situation that will exist in a few months. "Even if there was the political will from all parties to postpone elections, they had to be held either on August 15 or 22. This is provided for in the constitution. "There was no room for September," he added, adding that we are holding "festivals" without an object "and that we have been dealing with a non-existent issue since this morning".

For his part, AKEL Parliamentary Representative George Loukaidis, when asked about the possibility of postponing the elections, stated that it is a "non-existent issue". "It has not been raised by anyone and therefore has not even been discussed," he said.
