A new pricing policy of the Ministry of Health and all stakeholders came into force last Friday, which provides for cheaper drug prices.

According to "Phileleftheros", the new pricing policy of the Ministry of Health brings cheaper drugs, since prices will now be determined based on the lower prices of expensive, medium and cheap countries in the "basket" of the pricing system and not based on average prices. as has been the case to date.

The new updated price list will start to apply from April 1, 2018.

According to the relevant decree, Austria, Germany, Denmark are defined as expensive countries in the pricing system, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Sweden as medium countries and France, Greece and Portugal as cheap countries.

For the calculation of the price "wholesale prices in all ten reference countries will be examined and the lowest price from the group of expensive countries, the two lowest prices from the group of medium countries and the lowest price from the group of cheap countries ".

The new policy was developed after a dialogue between the Ministry of Health and all stakeholders and the relevant price list will be updated every year while the pricing policy will be evaluated and revised accordingly every two years.

The new pricing policy also includes provisions that protect cheap drugs since the goal of the Ministry of Health is not to observe the phenomenon of mass withdrawal of cheap drugs from the Cypriot market, as has happened in the past.

In addition, in the case of non-prescription drugs, the prices are set by the importer / manufacturer who is obliged to submit a relevant application to the State Pharmaceutical Services.
