According to a report by the World Health Organization, Europeans are proving to be "strong glasses", since despite the relative progress, the deaths due to alcohol reach 290,000 every year. But what is the position of European countries? What is the position of Cyprus on alcohol consumption?

The World Health Organization is once again sounding the alarm about alcohol consumption, stressing that efforts need to be stepped up, at least in terms of reaching out to young people through targeted advertising.

Lithuania has the highest level of alcohol consumption, recording an average of 15 liters per citizen.

In the United Kingdom, consumption of 11,4 liters of alcohol per citizen is recorded, while it is in the 20th place behind countries such as Germany, Bulgaria and France.

Despite the relatively good ranking in which the results are for Britain are not satisfactory, because the frequency of alcohol consumption remains high.

Ireland, however, is in the fourth worst position with people consuming an average of 13 liters of alcohol per citizen according to WHO data.

According to Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, alcohol consumption has fallen in many European countries but not to the desired levels.

He stressed that those responsible for strategy should implement effective practices to combat alcohol consumption such as price increases, limited availability and banning advertising.

He also noted that the effects of alcohol consumption remain worrying because about 800 people die every day in European countries due to damage caused by alcohol.

The WHO prepared the relevant report collecting data on how many liters of pure alcohol are consumed in each country.

Pure alcohol is measured as one milliliter per milliliter per drink. For example, one liter of 37,5% vodka contains 375 ml of pure alcohol.

The countries with the highest alcohol consumption after Lithuania are the Czech Republic, the Czech Republic (14,4 liters of alcohol), Germany (13,4 liters), Ireland (13 liters) and Luxembourg (13 liters).

At lower levels, Norwegians and Italians drank the least alcohol, consuming 7,5 liters of alcohol per year.
Malta, the Netherlands, Croatia and Sweden also recorded less than 10 liters of alcohol per person.

Cyprus records an average of 10,8 liters of alcohol consumption per person.

In addition, the WHO emphasizes once again the various devastating health consequences of alcohol consumption, as more than 290,000 deaths in Europe each year are due to cancer, liver cirrhosis and heart disease.

In addition, 18,3% of deaths, more than 50,000 people, die from road accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol, from suicides or alcohol-related crimes.
