The Informal European Council Meeting is taking place today in Prague, in which the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis, is participating.

According to Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos, during Friday's Informal European Council the leaders of the 27 EU member states will exchange views on three pressing and interrelated issues.

First, the war in Ukraine will be discussed, with a focus on continuing to provide economic, political and other support to the country, in the shadow of Russia's recent illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories;

Secondly, the energy issue, with the primary aim of ensuring the EU's energy supply on the one hand and the availability of affordable energy to households and businesses on the other, especially in view of the approaching winter

The third issue concerns the economic situation, in an effort to seek ways in which they can be addressed as best as possible, on the one hand, the overall challenges for the economy of the EU and its member states, prominently the high inflation for households and businesses and on the one hand to support growth and jobs, as well as the protection of vulnerable citizens.

Mr. Pelekanos also underlined that in his interventions the President of the Republic will talk about all the aforementioned burning issues, proposing practical solutions for the benefit of citizens and businesses on a pan-European scale.

He said that he would make special reference to the possibility of the Eastern Mediterranean, and Cyprus in particular, to contribute to Europe's energy supply at this difficult time, underlining that the invitations observed on behalf of Turkey cause problems, not only in Cyprus, Greece and other countries in the region, but also that in the final analysis, they damage the very European planning regarding energy security.
