Inflation at 8,9% in August – Decrease in the Consumer Price Index

Inflation in August 2022 increased at a rate of 8,9%, the Statistical Service announced on Friday. In the same month, the Consumer Price Index decreased by 0,29 points to 113,34 points compared to 113,63 points in July 2022, with the decrease mainly due to the drop in the price of petroleum products.

 

Compared to July 2022, the biggest change was in the Transportation category which decreased by 3,5%. Oil Products had the biggest negative impact on the change in the August 2022 CPI compared to the corresponding index of the previous month, since it decreased by 7,31%. On the other hand, since July, agricultural products have increased by 3,42%.

Compared to August 2021, the biggest changes were recorded in Electricity, which increased by 62% and Petroleum Products by 31,6%. By category, the largest increases were observed in the Housing, Water, Electricity and LPG categories, which recorded an increase of 28,5% and Transportation, by 19,7%.

For the period January-August 2022, the CPI recorded an increase of 8,3% compared to the corresponding period last year. The biggest changes were presented in the categories Housing, Water Supply, Electricity and LPG, with an increase of 21,2% and Transportation, with 18,9%.

With reference to the impact units of each category on the Consumer Price Index, the biggest impact of August 2022 compared to August 2021 was the categories Housing, Water Supply, Electricity and LPG with 3,64 and Transportation 3,15.

The biggest negative impact on the CPI change compared to the previous month was the Transportation category, with a decrease of -0,69. The biggest impact on the change in the August 2022 CPI compared to the August 2021 index was Petroleum, with 2,83 units and Electricity with 2,38.
