President Sisi sees new horizons for cooperation with Cyprus

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed the wish to open new horizons of cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt. Addressing the special session of the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives today, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis and members of the Council of Ministers, President Sisi also appeared convinced that the two countries can succeed in meeting all challenges.

 
For his part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimitris Syllouris, before inviting President Sisi to the podium, said that he is in consultation with his counterparts from Egypt and Greece for the establishment of Tripartite Meetings of the Speakers of the three Parliaments, with his Speaker , Ali Abdel Aal, to have already responded positively.
 
In his speech before the House, through an interpreter, President Sisi referred to the absence of members of the Turkish Cypriot community from Parliament since 1963 and wished President Anastasiadis' tireless efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, a vital issue that he said was vital. not only for Cyprus but for the whole region.
 
He also referred to the close ties of friendship between the two peoples and said that Egypt was the second home of Greek Cypriots, while he also supported the independence of the Republic of Cyprus.
 
He added that the relations between the Presidents of the two countries, Archbishop Makarios and Gamal Abdel Nasser, contributed to the strengthening of relations between the two peoples, while he also referred to President Makarios' support for the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement. 1960.
 
Regarding the relations between the parliaments of the two countries, President Sisi said that he looks forward to their strengthening and the activation of the Cyprus-Egypt parliamentary friendship group.
 
The President of Egypt made special reference to regional issues, such as immigration and terrorism.
 
In particular, he said that the Eastern Mediterranean region is going through a period of instability, as developments in Libya and Syria have led to an increase in migration waves, as well as terrorism.
 
This, he said, requires that we increase the ways in which these dangers are prevented, that terrorism is tackled and that human rights are protected.
 
He also expressed his appreciation to Cyprus for supporting Cairo's efforts to counter terrorist acts aimed at destabilizing Egypt.
 
At the same time, he reaffirmed the will to cooperate with the Cypriot Government, in order to ensure the security of the peoples of the two countries, but also of the peoples of the region.
 
Countering terrorism, President Sisi added, is one of the most important dangers facing the world and can only be achieved through multilevel cooperation. He also said that Egypt is strengthening political cooperation with Cyprus. Welcoming President Sisi, Mr. Syllouris spoke of a historic day for the House of Representatives and said that his presence in this House is beyond symbolic and essential for the Governments, Parliaments and the people of Cyprus and Egypt.
 
He said that with his presence, President Sisi "seals and confirms our long-standing relations and close ties", while creating new, even more solid bases for maximizing relations in practical and effective cooperation.
 
"Our bilateral relations are currently going through their most productive and active phase, with consistent mutual support on the international political scene and deepening cooperation on issues of key importance for the two countries," he said.
 
He added that the tripartite cooperation of Greece, Cyprus and Egypt has already drawn up a joint strategy to promote cooperation, with the ultimate goal of security and prosperity of the peoples and the creation of conditions of stability in the wider region.
 
The Parliament, he continued, attaches maximum importance to the expansion of this cooperation at the parliamentary level, while he said that the issue of instituting Tripartite Meetings of Speakers of Parliaments was discussed with his Egyptian counterpart on the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly in the Parliament. .
 
After the positive response of Mr. Aal, Mr. Syllouris said that he is in contact with the Greek Parliament "so that this initiative can be embodied soon".
 
He also expressed the appreciation of both the House of Representatives and the Cypriot people to Egypt for the timeless and consistent attitude of the principles he adheres to in the efforts to find his own and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem.
 
Mr. Syllouris also expressed special thanks for the successful efforts made by Egypt within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to prevent the cancellation of upgrading actions or the recognition of the illegal regime in the occupied territories of the Republic of Cyprus.
 
Regarding the latest efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, the Speaker of Parliament said that "Turkey continues its unwavering stance, refuses to show respect for international and European law and insists on maintaining a system of guarantees in one form or another and staying Turkish army on the island ".
 
He also said that Cyprus has repeatedly experienced the policy of two measures and two stations from several countries, as well as the policy of equal distances.
 
"The Cyprus issue was and remains a problem of invasion and occupation, which must finally end," he said, expressing hope that efforts would soon lead to a just, viable and workable solution based on relevant UN resolutions and international law.
 
The Speaker of Parliament also reiterated Cyprus' solidarity with Egypt in the fight against terrorism, emphasizing that "the highest human right is the right to life."
 
Referring to Egypt's role in the region, he said it was a key EU partner on issues such as the Palestinian issue and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "The friendly country can rely on the support of Cyprus, as a bridge of dialogue and cooperation between the Union and the Arab countries," he concluded.
