The 6th Sports and Volunteer Awards organized by the Municipality of Sotira at the Municipal Theater took place on Wednesday night.
During the event, organized ensembles and organizations were honored as well as persons who have shown remarkable charitable-voluntary work in the year 2018. Special mention was made during the awarding of honorary plaques at the "Apostolos Pavlos" and "Apostolos Barnabas" institutions and for great work performed in the employment of people with special and special in the province of Famagusta.
Honorary plaques were also awarded to athletes from Sotira, among them students, who have recorded a remarkable distinction in sports in the past year at provincial, local, national, pan-European or global level.
The event was greeted by the Mayor Sotiras Georgios Takkas and the Member of the Board of Directors of KOA Panagiotis Trisokkas.

It is with great pleasure that I am with you today to address a greeting on behalf of the Cyprus Sports Organization at the Sports and Volunteering Awards of the Municipality of Sotira. In this exceptional event we will pay tribute and honors to the clubs and to the athletic citizens of Sotira, who were distinguished in last year's sports season.
Mass Sports is the field that motivates everyone for healthy and proper sports, as well as their further development. The COM, in the context of supporting the Local Government, responds to both the needs and the messages of modern sports, which has as its main goal the health of every citizen, giving a new social face to Sports. Sport is the means to ensure a healthy future. The goal and policy of the CMO is to help all our fellow citizens to change their lifestyle and turn to exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
The Cyprus Sports Organization recognizes and appreciates the work carried out by the Municipality of Sotiras, with which we have a close and noble cooperation. On this occasion, we assure you that the COM will be a firm supporter in your efforts and always by your side for any help. On behalf of the COM, I would like to congratulate the citizens of Sotira for their active participation in the Sports for All (AGO) program. Sports can offer the maximum, offering fertile ground for vision, for a better quality of life, but also for creative and healthy employment of all citizens.
I congratulate the Mayor and the Municipal Council Sotiras for their rich and important sports work. It is a Municipality that through its sports action and participation proves in practice its interest in the sports activities of its citizens. Finally, I congratulate both the winners and the organizers for tonight's nice and simple event and we wish new success to the honorees.

Tonight's event is one of the most important events held by the Municipality of Sotiras. The organization of the Sports and Volunteer Awards of the Municipality of Sotira is an institution that for the 6th consecutive year rewards the citizens of Sotira who have achieved some important provincial, Cypriot, pan-Hellenic or pan-European success in the field of sports as well as individuals or organizations who to demonstrate rich and significant charitable and voluntary action. At the same time, personalities from the province of Famagusta are awarded, who thanks to their success in sports or their selfless general offer are an example to be imitated.
Sports and Volunteering are insurmountable values in shaping the personality of a citizen with a global and humanitarian education, as well as necessary elements of cohesion of a society. The principles of Olympism and Hellenism were the ones that nurtured the Greek ideal and inspired the brilliant Greek culture.
Nowadays, as never before, the values of solidarity, contribution to fellow human beings and the involvement of sports as an important factor in shaping the personality of a healthy citizen, are necessary and essential values to meet the challenges of today.
For this reason, the Municipality of Sotiras organizes tonight's event, which aims to reward volunteerism and sports and encourage the young people of our Municipality to acquire lessons and values of solidarity, altruism and selflessness.
In addition to tonight's event, the Municipality of Sotiras through various actions takes care to consolidate and transmit the spirit of volunteerism and charity.
Significant efforts are also made to encourage young people to participate in voluntary activities, which is made possible through the Coordinating Committee of Organized Ensembles, where the Organized Ensembles of our Municipality together with the Culture Committee of our Municipality organize events to strengthen social groups of the Savior.
At the same time, there are dozens of young volunteers whose help in organizing and holding the big events of our Municipality is undoubtedly valuable but also encouraging.
The efforts we make as a Municipality in the creation of infrastructure for sports and for the healthy employment of the youth of our Municipality are also important, such as the newly renovated Municipal Stadium Sotira which includes all the infrastructure for the employment of the football teams of our province, but also the attraction of sports tourism.
Finally, an important project for our Municipality is the implementation of the Center for Social Benefits, a center-ornament that will adorn both the Savior and the entire Province of Famagusta. A project that aspires to be the cultural lung of the area, which will include, among other things, an event and conference space, dance halls, a painting room and a reading room where it can accommodate both young and old people.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The seriousness with which the Culture Committee works as well as the working and employee staff of our Municipality, are proven in practice in events such as tonight. In an event in which the charitable and voluntary contribution is appreciated and applauded, while the sporting success is rewarded. We encourage our citizens in forms of entertainment that bring mental and physical health.
Closing my greeting tonight, I would like to congratulate tonight's winners. These are people and groups who exceeded their individual interest and with feelings of selflessness offered without consideration to their fellow human beings and to our society in general. They are also people whose mental reserves led them to record significant provincial, pan-Cypriot, pan-Hellenic or even global successes in the field of sports and which our Municipality must reward them as a minimum sample of appreciation.
Finally, I would like to thank the CMO who accepted our invitation and put under its auspices the whole event, OPAP which was the main sponsor of the event and the Culture Committee of our Municipality for the initiative of organizing the event and its curation program.
