Trabzon: The historic monastery of Panagia Soumelas opens

On May 18, World Museum Day, the first part of the Monastery of Panagia Soumela in Trabzon opens on the Black Sea, Turkish Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced.

The restoration works of the Monastery have been continuing in recent years and it is expected that on August 2019, XNUMX, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will perform the service normally.

A year before the start of maintenance work, the visitors of the monastery reached 700 thousand. Religious tourism is one of the main sources of income in the region. The monastery, which is believed to have been founded in the 4th century AD, was closed in 2015 for renovation work and to address the problem of falling rocks.
