Spyros Mercouris, brother of the unforgettable Melina Mercouri, passed away in the early hours of Friday, at the Nimetz hospital.

Spyros Mercouris was not feeling well at all yesterday and was rushed to Nimetz Hospital on Thursday morning. Unfortunately, his health condition was very serious and in the early hours of today, Friday, August 24, he left his last breath in the hospital.

Spyros Mercouri was born in 1925. He came from a political family, his sister was Melina Mercouri and they were five years apart.

He studied law at the University of Athens. During the occupation he took part in the national resistance. Member of the youth of EPEK, member of the Democratic Defense during the April dictatorship, founding member of PASOK. He organized a tour of his sister Melina Mercouri in 14 European countries during the anti-dictatorship struggle (March-April 1968). He served as an Adviser to the Ministry of Culture (1981-1989), coordinator of the first European Capital of Culture (Athens 1975), member of the Committee of Coordinators of the European Cultural Network for European Cities.

On his initiative, the Ministry of Culture held exhibitions in Greece and abroad that promoted Greek culture in its unified course from antiquity to the present day, such as Greece and the sea, Democracy and classical education, pre-Byzantine and Byzantine art, publishing activity of the Greeks in the Renaissance, the Human figure in early Greek art, Mycenaean Exhibition, the Spirit and the Body, etc. in collaboration with the Benaki Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum etc.

He participated in Greek and foreign productions, such as in the films "Christ is crucified again", "Never on Sunday" etc. He made the TV films "Poets sing Greece", "Traveling in myth and time", "Onassis' cultural heritage" and made a series of TV films about Byzantium and was honorary president of the "Actor's House" foundation.
