Ugur Sahin, co-founder of the German biotechnology company BioNTech, which developed the first vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, does not rule out the possibility that a third dose of the vaccine may be required by next year at the latest.

At the same time, he points out that it is more likely that from now on the vaccine will be repeated every two years, adapted to the new variants that will emerge, as is the case with the flu vaccine. "It will be our new regularity," he said.

In an interview with Der Spiegel, Sahin also said that "by the end of the summer we will have brought the pandemic under control" if the vaccination has progressed well.

According to him, the cases in Germany will decrease significantly from the end of May, while from the end of the summer the situation will be under control. "I am not saying that there will be no cases, but we will be able to return to our normal lives," he explains.

Mr. Sahin and BioNTech co-founder and wife Ezlem Tureci will be honored on March 19 with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
