30-40 new cases of child malignancy every year in Makareio

The latest developments surrounding leukemia and bone marrow transplantation were the focus of a conference organized by the Pediatric Oncology Clinic of the Archbishop Makarios III Hospital (NAM III) of the National Health Services Organization (OKYpY), on the topic "Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplantation : Recent developments".

The Clinic manages benign and malignant hematology cases as well as oncology cases (excluding Mediterranean anemia and coagulation disorders). Annually, it manages 30-40 new cases involving malignancies. It uses international protocols for the treatment of diseases while maintaining collaborations with centers of excellence abroad so that patients receive the highest quality care, it is stated in today's announcement by OKYPY.

As noted, in the lecture held on Wednesday, April 3 in a hotel in Nicosia, the participants had the opportunity to learn about the diagnosis and treatment of leukemia in children, adolescents and young adults. Among the participants was a representative of the World Health Organization in Cyprus.

The main speaker of the lecture was the world-renowned Professor of Pediatric Oncology / Hematology at the Charite University Hospital Berlin, Dr. Arend Von Stackelberg, as well as the pioneer of the Pediatric Oncology Clinic Dr. Loizos G. Loizou, Professor of Pediatrics, Pediatric Oncology / Pediatric Hematology at the Medical School of the University of Nicosia.

Welcoming the attendees, Christos Christou, Executive General Director of the Nicosia Division of OKYPY, warmly thanked Dr. Arend Von Stackelberg, Professor of Pediatrics for his valuable help and offer to the patients of NAM III, adding that it is crucial for the Hospital to have such valuable partners expressing the expectation that this collaboration will continue for many years.

Dr. Eleni Papachristodoulou, Paediatrician, Pediatric Oncologist/Hematologist, Director of the Pediatric Oncology Clinic of NAM III of OKYPY, presented the work of the Clinic, underlining how important its role is in the treatment of leukemia in our country, in turn expressing her thanks on behalf of of the staff of the Clinic to Dr. Arend Von Stackelberg.

Dr. Loizos Loizou, in his introductory speech entitled "How we will defeat leukemia", stated that "we are all here today because we are united by a common love and a common power to defeat cancer and leukemia", stressing that although the project is difficult, with information, coordination, research and collaboration with scientific centers of excellence like Charite, leaps and bounds are being made.

This was followed by the lecture of Dr. Stackelberg who presented the developments and trends around leukemia and referred to the modern methods of its treatment. A discussion followed, with Then the Professor answered questions and discussed with the audience various topics related to the disease.

It is noted that the Pediatric Oncology Clinic of NAM III of the OKYPY is today the only specialized center for the treatment of children and adolescents suffering from cancer and leukemia throughout Cyprus. Its purpose is the holistic care of the child during his treatment, including his psychosocial support.
