The first Winter Swimmers Festival took place on Sunday 21/01 at Makronisos beach in Agia Napa.

Defying the cold, 200 winter swimmers from all over Cyprus dived into the waters of Makronnisos beach in Ayia Napa today at the first Winter Swimmers Festival.

In addition to swimming, the participants of the Festival enjoyed games in the sand, rich food such as soup, zivania and plenty of wine.

The festival took place in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, while among the winter swimmers were the Mayors of Agia Napa and Deryneia.

The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zanettos, stated that "the organization of the Winter Swimmers Festival is a very important event that must be included in the promotion institutions of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and at the same time support the efforts of both the extension of the tourist season and the attraction of tourism of special interest" .

It is worth noting that the oldest swimmer is 88 years old.

Mrs Androula Fragou said to the SIGMA camera that "I want to show the world that the winter swimmer has an advantage against diseases".

The Deputy Minister of Tourism and the Mayor of Ayia Napa presented souvenirs to both the oldest and the youngest participants.
