The four-day Civil Defense workshop on "Use of Unmanned Aircraft during emergencies" was completed on Friday (13/9).

The last work of the laboratory concerned the exercise of Unmanned Aircraft in the area "Landa" in Ayia Napa.

According to the Director of the Regional Civil Defense of Nicosia and Famagusta, Kyriakos Chatzigeorgiou, the scenario of the exercise was to locate missing persons at sea, after an accident.

The purpose of the exercise, according to Mr. Hatzigeorgiou, was the mutual acquaintance and exchange of views between the experts of the European Union among themselves, as well as with the members of the Civil Defense, the Department of Forests and the Police. At the same time, he added, the aim is to test the equipment, not so much the hardware as the software, which has been developed by the Center for Excellence for Research and Innovation "Koios" of the University of Cyprus in order to help Civil Defense solve various problems faced by companies. .

The purpose of the drones, he noted, is to provide information for making quick and correct decisions in emergencies. "An image that the drones will send, he said, is clear and provides useful information."

The specific drones, according to the Director of the Regional Defense Policy of Nicosia and Famagusta, are specialized, with the most important feature that they have specialized software.

"The important thing, he said, is the software but also its use in any case. Someone will handle it differently, he said, in cases of flood, fire or finding a person.

The exercise was attended by 45 trainees from 16 EU member states and Israel, who also attended the Civil Defense workshop.
