On the occasion of the World Voluntary Coastal Cleanup Day, which is marked by voluntary coastal cleanups around the world, the Youth of Ecologists, in collaboration with the Cyprus Ecological Movement and the Cyprus Youth Organization, carried out four voluntary coastal cleanups in all coastal areas. of free Cyprus.

Like every other year, this year, during the cleaning, the waste was recorded and collected, according to the model of the Italian Organization Legambiente.

According to an announcement by the Movement's Youth, the numbers from this summer beach cleaning expedition show that the coasts and seabed of Cyprus have not breathed from the pandemic.

At Ziatzi beach in Ayia Napa, where the beach and the seabed were cleaned, the volunteers collected 14 Kg of rubbish from the beach and 58 Kg from the seabed respectively.

At the second station of the Campaign, Meneou beach in Larnaca, 131 Kg of garbage was collected from the coast alone. At the third stop of the Campaign, Moni beach in Limassol, the volunteers collected 217 Kg of garbage, cleaning only the coastline. At the last stop for the summer of 2020, Lara beach in Akamas, the volunteers collected a total of 97 Kg of garbage, cleaning the shore and the seabed.

To a large extent, the garbage collected belongs to the category of plastics, which due to wear and tear after disposal in nature, can not be recycled. At the same time, a large amount of garbage concerns large items such as beds, wheels, refrigerators, fishing gear, etc., which are usually dumped in bushes or at the bottom of the sea, or may even be washed away by the sea due to currents.
