The results of the four-day workshop of ideas and proposals for the design of two Amusement Parks in the residential areas of Kokkines and Kataspila were presented to the public on Sunday, November 19 at the Municipal Museum Thalassa by the Department of Architecture of Frederick University and the School of Architecture.

The workshop was held following a unanimous decision of the Municipal Council to support the initiative of the Mayor Mr. Giannis Karousos and the Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Municipal Committee for Development and Works Mr. Christos Zannettos for the implementation of their proposal by the two Higher Schools.

Regarding the design of the Park in the Kokkines area, the group of students took into account the protection of the existing invisible bushes on its northern border, retaining to a large extent elements from the current physical condition of the area. Also, a large axis from north to south will be the main movement, which will culminate in an observation platform that will face the sea.

The existing olive and carob tree orchard will be extended into the park and the playground will be marked by hexagonal grid constructions depending on the green. The existing windmill will remain active and will supply water and play areas near the main site, which will be able to host events, gatherings and cultural events.

For the Park in the Kataspila area, the students' proposal has as a basic element the game and the movement through the elements of water, air and land. A main route from east to west will connect the park with the neighboring green and residential areas.

This course will be signaled by the movement of a ditch with water that will supply the two existing water tanks with the operation of the existing windmill. Existing areas with invisibles will be enriched and protected to create a maze - game.

At the northern limits, a low climbing wall for children is proposed, while in the western part, outdoor gyms and playgrounds are located around a peculiar curved embossed configuration - a play element. The existing orchard with olives and figs is preserved and very close to it a central space is formed - a square in which stands from the northern neighborhood.

Commenting on the proposals, the Mayor Mr. Giannis Karousos expressed his satisfaction for the result of the workshop, emphasizing the fact that many of the ideas that emerged from an older Laboratory coordinated by Frederick University today are mature projects and are being implemented. At the same time, he identified an element for each park that he considers special, such as the platform - observatory in Kokkines and the organic playground in Kataspila.

The Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Municipal Committee for Development and Works Mr. Christos Zannettou commented with very positive words the ideas and assured that they will feed the plans of the Municipality, while many of those presented will be implemented in the coming years.

The Deputy Municipal Secretary and Municipal Engineer Mr. Athos Georgiou also commented on the results very positively, pointing out that based on these plans, future extensions and connections should be organized at the urban level, creating a green pedestrian network. and cyclists that will maximize the use of the two parks.

It should be mentioned that the future extensions of the Park should be taken into account since various green spaces will be gradually integrated in them, which will be granted by the private neighboring plots at the stage of their construction development.

Therefore, he added, the design of the Park should not be static but should take into account their future extensions in order to be a living cell in the urban planning of residential areas and not just a decorative element.

The satisfactory use of the spaces by the inhabitants of the area in general will be the guarantee of success for their entire configuration, concluded Mr. Georgiou.
