Government in no way interferes or does not interfere in the administration of justice, repeated Government Spokesman Kyriakos Kousios when asked today about the issue of the 19-year-old Brit.

In statements on the sidelines of the event in Alassa, the spokesman said that it would not be right for the Government "to intervene in any way".

"It would mean that we do not recognize and respect the separation of powers. It would mean that we have a Government that intervenes and perhaps guides or even leads our courts. This is not the case. We have full confidence in our courts, we have full confidence in the administration of justice by our courts. "Beyond that, no decision has been taken and the issue has not been discussed, until the issuance of the court decision", said Mr. Kousios.

He added that from the date the court decision will be issued, "if the Government has to think about something or take some decisions, I assure you that it will do so".

Asked if the British Government had contacted the Cypriot Government on the matter, the spokesman said "no. "Apart from the statement from the Foreign Office (of Britain) there was no official contact with the British Government."
