The results of the second call for proposals for WiFi4EU, which took place from 4 to 5 April, the Commission announced, based on which 3.400 municipalities will receive vouchers worth 15.000 euros to cover the cost of installing Wi-Fi hotspots in public spaces, including public centers, public libraries, museums, public parks or squares.
Among them are four local authorities from the province of Famagusta and specifically the Municipalities Savior and Deryneia and communities Avgorou and Frenaru.
The total budget for this call was € 51 million and the applications came from all the countries participating in the program, namely EU Member States, Iceland and Norway.
Digital Economy and Society Commissioner Mariya Gabriel welcomed the more than 10.000 nominations.
In total, almost 9000 "WiFi4EU coupons" will be available, while by the end of 2020 two more invitations will be organized, including one later this year.
The WiFi4EU initiative is part of an ambitious review of EU telecommunications rules, including new measures to meet Europeans 'growing connectivity needs and strengthen Europe' s competitiveness. In the first call in 2018, 2.800 municipalities were selected to receive a WiFi4EU voucher worth € 15.000.
