"The Chamber of Famagusta, on the occasion of the discussion of the Bill for Local Government Reform, after a serious study, taking into account the specifics of the Free Province of Famagusta and after examining all the parameters related to the two scenarios, ie that of creating one -mayor, with the unification of all the Municipalities and Communities of the Region or the creation of more Municipalities, came to the decision to support in the most obvious way the voting against the proposal for the creation of a super-municipality.
The decision of our Chamber was mainly based on the conclusion of the technocratic study prepared by the house "Ernst & Young", but also on the local and national realities which we quote:
1. The creation of a super-Municipality, will be similar both numerically and geographically to the occupied Municipality of Famagusta and will involve the visible risk after a period of 10-20 years to replace the occupied Municipality of Famagusta and witness its final burial . I consider that this is nationally unacceptable and that the risk of creating Municipalities of Nea Famagusta or Nea Kyrenia, etc. is visible as has happened in many cases in the recent past in Greece.
2. The support of the proposal for the creation of at least two Municipalities by the Chamber of Famagusta, was based as mentioned above, on the conclusions of the study of "Ernst & Young", which scientifically substantiates its position. which is clearly in favor of the creation of two or more Municipalities, emphasizing the "brand name" of the Municipalities of Ayia Napa mainly and that of Protaras, which has already begun to be created. It is a given that to create a "brand name" requires many years of work and huge financial costs for promotion and if one could cost its value, it would amount to several hundred million euros.
3. The creation of a tourist Municipality with the unification of the Municipalities of Ayia Napa, Sotiras and Liopetri, will probably be something unique in the world, as it will extend along a coastline of almost thirty kilometers and at the same time will give impetus to the community of Liopetri to enter finally on the world tourist map, through the unique beauty of the "Liopetri River", the reconstruction of which has already begun. At the same time, Protaras, which will belong to the Municipality of Paralimni, will maintain its own "brand name" which in recent years has been upgraded and gained great recognition on the world tourist map.
For the above thoughts and reflections, we always have in mind primarily the National interest of our divided homeland. At the same time, we take into account the latest events with the opening of the enclosed city of Famagusta, which unfortunately suit those who support the division of our country. Finally, in addition to the above and having as our main concern the rational economic and business development of all Municipalities and Communities of the Free Province of Famagusta, the Chamber of Famagusta does not support the creation of a super-Municipality and supports the proposed alternative scenario for merging the Municipalities of Agia Napas, and Sotiras with the community of Liopetri and the creation of a new municipality that will include the Municipality of Deryneia together with the inland communities, which together with the existing Municipality of Paralimni the total number of municipalities of the free Province of Famagusta will increase to three.
The Chamber of Famagusta, in the context of the campaign in support of its positions which are in the interest of the Municipalities and Communities involved, has transferred its positions to all parliamentary parties, in its effort to inform and convince of their correctness, hoping that they will be voted for the general good of the city and the Province of Famagusta "
