LIOPETRI: The details of the electoral process for the election of a new Common Leader

On Sunday, January 31, a by-election is expected to be held to elect a new Mayor of Liopetri, after the untimely death, on December 20, of Mayor Kyriakos Trisokkas, who held the position for 26 years.

At present, the position of Common Leader is filled by the Deputy Common Leader, while according to the Legislation, the alternate election must be held within 45 days from the vacancy and the elected Common Leader will hold the office until the end of the term of the Community Council.

As the Prefecture of the Famagusta Electoral District, George Chrysafinis, stated in KYPE, “there is an order for the by-elections to be held on January 31st. If and as long as the elections are held, all the protocols provided in accordance with the latest decree of the Minister of Health will be observed in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic ".

He added that "there is a relevant protocol for the way the ballot boxes will be set up, without screens, with protective glass and change of pens".

Answering a relevant question, Mr. Chrysafinis said that "on Thursday, January 21, the candidacies for the position of Commonwealth of Liopetri will be submitted to the offices of the District Administration in Paralimni. The candidacies will be submitted from 09.00 in the morning until 12.00 at noon, while time will be given for submitting any objections until 12.00 on the next day, January 22 ".

In another question, the Prefect of Famagusta answered that "the new Common Leader will perform his duties until December 31, 2021, ie until the end of the term of the current Community Council. "On December 31, Community elections will be held and the new Community Council and of course the new Commonwealth will take office from January 1, 2022."

He also stated that "for the by-elections, six polling stations will be set up at the Primary School of Liopetri, while about 3.340 people have the right to vote. The elections will be held from 07.00 in the morning until 12.00 at noon, there will be an hour break and the voting will resume at 13.00 and will end at 6 in the afternoon ".

According to Mr. Chrysafinis, "the result of the by-elections is expected until 19.30 in the evening and immediately afterwards the announcement of the new Mayor of Liopetri will take place, which will take place in the Community Council. The announcement will be made according to the weather conditions that will prevail on that day, inside or outside the Community Council, always observing the protection measures against the coronavirus, according to the Law on Infection Clearance ".
