The need to adopt measures that will improve the long-term tourism product of Cyprus, was mentioned by the President of DIKO Nikolas Papadopoulos, in his statements during his tour, today in the free province of Famagusta, where he had meetings with hoteliers, shopkeepers and representatives of "Thalassa" Museum, in Ayia Napa.

At the same time, referring to the increase in costs for basic goods, he said that his party is claiming the adoption of compensatory measures to protect vulnerable groups of the population.

In his statements, the President of DIKO stated that "in the context of the dialogue developed by the Democratic Party on the problems faced by the tourism industry, we visited today the free province of Famagusta to listen to the concerns, problems, challenges and suggestions of stakeholders in the tourism industry ".

The province of Famagusta, he said, may have been hit harder than any other by the pandemic and the problems that had arisen from the spread of the coronavirus.

That is why, said Mr. Papadopoulos, today we heard interesting suggestions that will help us formulate proposals for dealing with the short-term and medium-term problems caused by the pandemic, but also to adopt measures that will improve our tourism product in the long run. the quality of the product we offer as a tourism industry, in order to attract a larger number of tourists but also more income for the Cypriot economy.

According to him, it is possible, it is enough to have a comprehensive integrated design for the tourism industry.

The President of DIKO in his statements also referred to the statistics that show as he said that Cyprus is below the average of the European Union in terms of the percentage of our population that is below the poverty line and is facing risk of social exclusion.

"If this fact is combined with the other unpleasant fact that we find in the fact that there is a rapid increase in the cost of basic goods, a very difficult 2022 is predicted for a large number of our fellow citizens," he said.

That is why, he said, DIKO insists and demands the adoption of compensatory measures to increase the cost of basic goods to protect the vulnerable classes of our population and strengthen the welfare state to address the risk of impoverishment of our people.
