A meeting held on Thursday under the chairmanship of the Minister of Interior reviewed a chronic problem concerning the quality of services provided on the beaches, both in terms of infrastructure and human resources.

The meeting was attended by the competent departments of the Ministry of Interior, the provincial administrations, the Department of Public Administration and Personnel of the Ministry of Finance, the Union of Municipalities and the Union of Communities, representatives of the SEK and PEO Guilds and representatives of organized lifeguards.

In order to address the aforementioned problems and shortcomings, it was decided as:

(a) The Municipalities of Paralimni and Ayia Napa are part of the "SALAMIS" Plan in which they did not participate until today, with effect from 01/01/2022. With this development, all the beaches of the country are under a single management.

(b) The Ministry of Interior will immediately proceed within July with a tender announcement for the construction of 45 lifeguard towers of modern specifications.

(c) At the expense of the Ministry of Interior, the immediate purchase of 5 additional jet skis for the life-saving needs of all provinces, as well as the supply of life-saving equipment such as defibrillators, portable radios, etc. total cost 153.000 euros.

In addition, lifeguards' work issues were discussed, including the beach staffing schedule, payroll upgrades and employment conditions.

The Minister of Interior undertakes an initiative for consultation with the competent Services and the representatives of the organized groups with the aim of the short and final settlement of the issue.

In view of today's decisions, the Pancyprian Association of Professional Lifeguards informed the Ministry of Interior that it is suspending the three-hour work stoppage scheduled for tomorrow.
