"Attica Treaties" in Konnos (VIDEO)

The mayor of Paralimni, Theodoros Pyrillis, raised the issue of security on the beach of Konnos, which is jointly managed by the Municipalities of Paralimni and Ayia Napa, the day before yesterday. Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting on another issue at the Diocese of Constantia in Paralimni, Mr. Pyrillis stressed that the issue of opening an escape route from the beach of Konnos, which is known to be downhill (something like a ravine) and has a only entry and exit for cars. cars, which is a dead end. That is, someone who will enter the beach of Konnos, will have to leave the one and only street that exists.

On the occasion of what happened dramatically in Attica and given that the beach of Konnos presents common elements with the beaches of Attica where the tragedies occurred, a major security issue is raised for the beach of Konnos, underlined the mayor of Paralimni. He added that the beach is dominated by pine forest and dense bush vegetation that in case of fire would automatically create conditions for entrapment of unsuspecting visitors. Creating an immediate danger to their lives, but also to their vehicles.

Mr. Pyrillis also said that the Department of Forests, which manages the entire wooded beach in free Famagusta, took some measures but not the most important. That is, the opening of a second road on this beach. And this, as Mr. Pyrillis claimed, "because he does not want to sacrifice some pines".

At the moment, he continued, that the public is watching with awe what is happening in Attica, we consider that it is the right time to raise the issue for concern and called on the competent ministries to intervene towards the creation of complete security conditions on the beach of Konnos.

On the occasion of the public complaints of the mayor of Paralimni, the newspaper "Phileleftheros" repeatedly contacted by phone and text messages with the director of the Department of Forests, Charalambos Alexandrou, but without a response from him. The director of the Fire Service, Markos Tragolas, told "F" that he has no authority to express an opinion on a beach which is traditionally managed entirely by the Forest Department.

Important notes for the beach

The newspaper "Phileleftheros" visited the beach of Konnos and found the following:

* The measures taken by the Department of Forests and to which Mr. Pyrillis referred concern the construction of a small square, approximately in the middle of the downhill road to the beach. People are supposed to take refuge there in the event of a fire. Although this measure does not solve the problem in case of fire and the need for guests to escape safely with their vehicles, this area is used as a parking space and almost every day - and always on weekends - is full of vehicles.

* It is not enough that the one and only road leading to the downhill beach is narrow, no one seems to deal with the issue of parking on the right and left of the road, which in many places due to this situation is very difficult to access.

All this happens on a beach that on average in the summer accommodates around a thousand people at any time (beach, leisure cafe and nature trails), while on weekends this number can reach up to two thousand people.
