Presentation of the plans for the renovation and configuration of the central core and the square of the Municipality of Sotira took place on the night of Thursday, April 10 at the Municipal Theater of Sotira.
The plans were presented by the Mayor Sotiras Georgios Takkas and the team of consultants-designers in which the competition was awarded, "Orthostructure Architectural & Engineering Cosultants".
The construction budget of the project amounts to 1,5 million euros and will include, among others, complete pedestrianization of Eleftherias Square and Sotiras Street during the evening hours, landscaping of the central parking lot, level separation of sidewalks from road for ease of mobility, placement streets, change of facades of buildings on Sotiras Street with traditional architecture and creation of parks and rest areas.
Regarding the movement of vehicles within the center of the Municipality, the traffic is regulated by one-way streets, and traffic lights, while in particular Eleftherias Square will be landscaped by planting trees and rest areas and fountains will be created.
In his statements, Mayor Sotiras stated that this is a historical project for Sotira which on the one hand upgrades the image of the center of the Municipality and the entire central core through a studied proposal, while the new spaces that will be created and especially the creation of a square contribute to socialization but also encouraging the creation of new businesses in the center of the Municipality, so that Sotira becomes more attractive to citizens and visitors but also accessible to the disabled.
According to Mr. Takkas, the entire design of the central core of Sotira took into account the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SBAK) which aims to improve the quality of life of citizens and visitors but also to meet the needs for mobility of people and transport of goods, based on a targeted effort by the European Union to achieve the goal of Sustainable Mobility and Development.
Equally important is the decision of the Municipality, said Mr. Takkas, to change the facade of buildings and shops on Sotiros Street, a plan that will radically change the appearance of the center and the market of Sotira, attracting both visitors and new businesses.
Mayor Sotiras also stressed that the suggestions submitted by the citizens during the presentation of the plans, such as the management of rainwater, the lighting of the church monuments, the creation of parking lots and the reconstruction of the shops on the street, were taken seriously. Σωτήρος.
The project is in the process of submitting an application for permits and the start of construction is estimated at 2020-2021.
