Famagusta Hoteliers: Waiting until early June - 80% of hotels will remain closed

The Board of Directors of PASYXE Famagusta met on Friday, May 29, 2020 in an extraordinary meeting and examined the current situation regarding the memoranda for the restart of the tourism industry and the prospects of opening up the various markets. Both in time and under what conditions.

Among other things, the members of the Board of Directors PASYXE Famagusta exchanged views on the opening of hotels, the protocols on various aspects of the issue and the prospects of tourist traffic for 2020.

As mentioned, the landscape is still murky and the liquidity situation in 2020 is considered to be an extremely difficult year as there is no provision for a satisfactory flow of tourists justifying the opening of all hotels or a large number. It was stressed that hoteliers will have to wait until the beginning of June to find out if they will be able to welcome local tourists who will allow the opening of small units and at a later stage for tourism from abroad.

According to a press release, the main markets for the region, England, Russia and Sweden are still closed to Cyprus and there is no indication of whether and when they will open. Without these markets, it is not possible to operate most hotels, as they represent 75-80% of the tourist traffic.

At the same time, PASYXE Famagusta emphasizes that the hoteliers of the area are obsessed with a strong desire to reopen their hotels and with financial implications, given that there are the necessary conditions regarding the positive response of airlines and major travel agencies.

"We hope that the major markets in Britain, Russia and Sweden will be able to boost tourism, even in mid-July," the statement said.

At the same time, the Board of PASYXE Famagusta described as very positive the news that WIZZ Air makes Larnaca Airport as its all-year base and congratulated the Minister of Transport Mr. Giannis Karousos and the Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Savvas Perdios for this success.

They also expressed satisfaction with the other measures announced, such as the reduction of VAT from 9% to 5%, the use of vouchers and other measures related to the support of the hotel industry, such as the liquidity that the industry.

Finally, the members of PASYXE Famagusta expressed their concern for 2021, which they described as another difficult year.
