The percentage of boys, aged 35 to 40, who smoke in Cyprus is 15 to 18%, according to one of the surveys presented today at the 2nd Public Health Conference organized by the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health of the Technological University of Cyprus.

In his statements, the Associate Professor of Environmental Health at the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health, TEPAK, Konstantinos Makris, stated that the results of one of the surveys conducted on smoking among young people in Cyprus, record a high percentage in boys aged 15 to 18, which reaches 35 to 40%.

Smoking rate is considered lower but higher in girls of the same age, since one in four girls (about 25%) seems to be used to smoking.

Another survey presented at the Conference, to map premature mortality, shows that Cypriots live longer in urban areas than in the countryside.

"Some socio-economic profile results in Cyprus show that Cypriots living in urban areas have a better life expectancy and live longer than those living in the countryside," said K. Makris, adding that, from the moment one would expect exactly on the contrary, in-depth study is needed to justify it.

Among other things, the results of research on the environmental reports of the population and the effects on the thyroid gland were presented, especially in women, where according to Professor Makris "there is a correlation with the frequent consumption of products containing plastic substances, such as canned food and some cosmetics. and the fluctuations that this exposure causes in thyroid hormone levels ”.

He added that a large study has been presented in collaboration with Cypriot and English institutions on whether a diet that is made early in the newborn and is rich in fish or eggs, protects the child to develop later in life. , some food allergies.

The meeting, which ends in the afternoon, is under the auspices of the Minister of Health George Pamporidis.
