The Parliamentary Committees on Environment and Health today examined in an extraordinary, joint session complaints, according to which there is an outbreak of cancer in the areas of Vrysoullos, Acheritos and Strovilia, due to the presence of antennas of the British Bases.

Specifically, in the area of Vrysoullon, which has 100-120 inhabitants, 13 cases of cancer have occurred…

The AKEL MP and Chairman of the Environment Committee Adamos Adamou, stated that the complaints were examined after a study conducted by two scientists in the specific areas, "where there has been an increased incidence of cancer due to the impact of the British Base antennas».

According to him, representatives of the British Bases were invited to attend the meeting of the two Committees today, however they only sent a letter in which they expressed their position on the issue.

Ο Mr. Adamou called for greater involvement of the state and the relevant services, stating that, in addition to the study, what the Commission is interested in is the position of the state, ie the Ministry of Health and the competent services, which are responsible for citizens' health, and should take measures to reduce, as far as possible, the risk to human health.

"There are people who get sick and live 200 meters from the antennas in Strovilia," he said. Mr. Adamou, indicating that it is not right to have houses at a distance of 200 meters and the Commander of the British Bases to speak only about farms, located at a distance of 700-1500 meters from the antennas.

The chairman of the Environment Committee said that the effects of electromagnetic waves on human health "are a gray area", which means that there is work to be done and work to be done. who acquit them ".

According to Mr. Adamou, the Ministry of Health is conducting a study that is expected to be completed in December in order to confirm or reject the findings of the research presented today before the Commission.

At the same time, the Mr. Adamou Considers that it is better to conduct independent studies that indicate the measures to be taken.

He also referred to the need to take precautionary measures, strictly adhering to the guidelines and placing sources of electromagnetic waves away from residential areas.

For his part, the DISY MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis He said that the British bases "lie in the answer they gave today in the Parliament that the antennas are more than a kilometer away from the residential areas" and stated that the results of the research presented by the independent scientists cause fear and panic.

The number of cancer cases is disproportionate to the local population and exceeds 4% of the average for the rest of Cyprus, he said. Specifically, he reported that 13 cases of cancer occurred in Vrysoules in a population of 100-120 inhabitants.

"The Services of the Republic of Cyprus have a similar sleep," he said, adding that the State Services should be observant and investigative. "There has been no interest and sensitivity on the part of the state services over the last ten years to protect citizens," he said.

The Parliamentary Health Committee will raise the issue again in January to take into account other ongoing studies, according to the Mr. Hatzigianni. Source: LIBERAL
